This Dutch delicacy originated in the early 1800s (!) in Gouda, the city famous for its cheese makers, first under the name of ‘siroopwafels’ (syrup waffles). They were made from the left-overs of a bakery’s biscuit production, and hence very cheap. That’s how they were also widely known as ‘poor man’s waffles’. This crunchy, sweet surprise with a mild caramel taste is the ultimate coffee companion.
Serving suggestion: cover your hot cup of coffee with a waffle for a few minutes. This will slowly melt the caramel inside the waffle for just that extra flavor sensation.
