An all-time favorite from the Netherlands: original salted Dutch Herring. The herring is cleaned immediately after the catch, cured with salt, and deep-frozen. A completely natural, healthy fish bite, always eaten raw.
Serving suggestion: you might be familiar with the traditional herring on a white bun with some chopped onion on top, but why not try to make this delicious Fisherman’s Salad at home? Cook 500g of small potatoes (or chop larger potatoes in small chunks). Have 1 can of white beans ready, 2 cooked beetroots, 4 Dutch Herrings, 3 shallots and 3 gherkins, 5 tablespoons mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon mustard, freshly ground pepper, 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley, 1 lemon. Quite a list of ingredients, but oh so easy to prepare: cut beetroots, shallots, gherkins in small bits, and mix all with the mayonnaise, mustard, peppers, potato chunks and lemon juice in a large bowl. Cut the herrings in small pieces, and add to the mixture. Use the parsley as garnishing on top of the salad, and serve with freshly toasted bread from the oven.
